Birmingham Panthers NXT Gen fall just one point short in thriller

04 March 26

Birmingham Panthers NXT Gen took to the court at the Worcester Arena on Saturday afternoon to face Leeds Rhinos in an intense and hard-fought contest.

The Birmingham Panthers endured a challenging start, trailing 11–22 at the end of the first quarter as early nerves and some rushed decision-making allowed the Rhinos to capitalise. However, the response from the team was nothing short of impressive.

The second and third quarters showcased NXT Gen at their very best. A phenomenal 17-goal second quarter swung the momentum and brought them right back into contention. In defence, Alyssa Rose, Caitlin O’Sullivan, and Makeda Thomas were relentless, applying constant pressure, forcing turnovers, and disrupting the Rhinos’ flow. Changes in attack proved equally effective, with Tori Akinrinlola moving into WA and Sophie Shipway into C. The fresh combination injected pace and fluidity, opening up the court beautifully and delivering clean ball to the circle edge and into the hands of the shooters.

The final quarter was a thrilling battle, packed with high-intensity moments from both sides. Sophie Egbaren and Pippa Dixon were commanding in the shooting circle, holding strong under pressure and keeping the scoreboard ticking. In the dying seconds, the Brimingham Panthers had a crucial decision to make – take the one-point option to level the game or reset for a potential two-point winner. Unfortunately, a misplaced feed resulted in a turnover, and the match finished in heartbreaking fashion at 55–56 to the Rhinos.

Despite the narrow loss, the Birmingham Panthers showed tremendous resilience and unity. The team rallied together at the final whistle to celebrate Makeda Thomas, who deservedly earned Opposition Player, Birmingham Panthers Players’ Player, and Coaches’ Player of the Game for her outstanding and relentless defensive performance.

A tough result, but a performance full of heart, growth, and promise. Catch the squad again this weekend against the University of Bath, Friday night FCP 7pm.
