Birmingham Panthers Produce Exciting Contest in Essex

26 May 26

The second last round of the season delivered a fiercely contested battle as the Birmingham Panthers faced the London Mavericks at the University of Essex on Sunday. From the opening whistle, the Birmingham Panthers were determined to disrupt the London Mavericks’ rhythm and challenge their chance at a win.

With just one win on the board this season, the Birmingham Panthers entered the match with clear determination and a hunger to secure another victory. Both teams were also forced to battle challenging conditions, as a UK heatwave saw temperatures soar to 30 degrees.

The opening quarter was tightly contested, with both sides taking time to settle into the game. Feeding and passing errors appeared at both ends as the teams adjusted to the pressure and conditions. At quarter time, the scores were locked at 13-13.

At the start of the second quarter, the lineup remained unchanged, determined to maintain momentum and continue applying pressure. With five minutes remaining in the half, the introduction of Ruth Hughes at C and movement of Izzy Kaye to WD proved crucial, adding fresh legs and speed through the attacking third. Neither side could break away, and the teams headed into half time level once again at 26-26.

The third quarter brought further tactical changes for the Birmingham Panthers. Kira Rothwell entered midway through the quarter, adding pace into the circle and allowing Betsy Creak to isolate one-on-one and build into the super shot period. Alyssa Rose also made her debut appearance, taking to the court at GK and immediately causing disruption with her reach and quick footwork. Despite the Birmingham Panthers efforts, they entered the final quarter trailing by four goals at 44-40.

The fourth quarter had everything. Betsy Creak was instrumental in the shooting circle, shooting at 84%, leading the teams two-point scoring efforts. With just 30 seconds remaining, the Birmingham Panthers scored to edge ahead by one before the London Mavericks regained possession from the centre pass. Under intense defensive pressure, hands over the ball forced a missed shot that sailed out of court, sealing a thrilling 52-51 victory for Birmingham Panthers.

It was a long-awaited win, and the emotion shown by the players reflected exactly what it meant to the group. Betsy Creak was deservedly named Player of the Match following her outstanding performance. The team will now regroup ahead of their final game of the season against Leeds Rhinos this Friday night in Sheffield.
